At Arbor Oaks Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, care goes far beyond medical attention and daily routines. True care means feeling seen, heard, and valued — and that’s exactly what our volunteers help create every time they walk through our doors.
From the moment a volunteer arrives, the atmosphere changes. There’s a new energy in the hallways, smiles appear a little faster, and conversations linger a little longer. For our residents, these visits are more than activities on a calendar — they are meaningful connections to the outside world.
Some volunteers bring instruments, others bring playlists, and a few simply bring their voices — but all bring joy. A familiar hymn, a classic country tune, or a favorite song from decades past has a powerful ability to unlock memories. Residents often begin tapping their feet, humming along, or sharing stories connected to the music. In these moments, time seems to blur as generations connect through melody. Music doesn’t just entertain, it reconnects residents with moments from their lives — weddings, dances, road trips, and family gatherings. Volunteers make those memories feel close again.
While performances are wonderful, sometimes the most meaningful visits are the quietest ones. A volunteer sitting beside a resident, asking about their childhood, career, or favorite recipes, can turn an ordinary afternoon into a treasured experience. These conversations remind our elders that their stories still matter — because they do. Many residents spent their lives raising families, building careers, and shaping their communities. Volunteers give them the opportunity to continue sharing that wisdom and feel heard.
Volunteers of all ages visit Arbor Oaks — students, church groups, local organizations, and individuals simply wanting to give back. Each visit strengthens the bond between our residents and the community around them. For younger visitors, the experience offers perspective, empathy, and respect for the generations that came before them. For residents, it provides renewed purpose and the joy of mentoring, laughing, and connecting with people outside their daily routine. These relationships quickly become something special — familiar faces residents look forward to seeing each week.
Loneliness can affect emotional and physical health at any age, especially later in life. Regular social interaction helps improve mood, supports cognitive engagement, and enhances overall well-being. But beyond the measurable benefits, volunteer visits provide something even more important: They remind our residents they are still part of a living, caring community.
Every handshake, song, card game, and shared story reinforces that Arbor Oaks isn’t just a facility — it’s a place filled with relationships.
To our volunteers: you may feel like you’re simply giving an hour or two of your time, but to our residents, you’re giving companionship, laughter, memories, and belonging. You bring the outside world in, and in doing so, you make Arbor Oaks feel even more like home.
If you’ve ever considered volunteering, we would love to welcome you. Sometimes the smallest gestures — a conversation, a smile, a song — can make the biggest difference.
Because at Arbor Oaks, community doesn’t stop at our front door… it walks in every day.
